Volleyball Basics

Learn about serving, passing, and teamwork.

Welcome to the Court

Volleyball court

Volleyball is a team sport that requires practice and communication. Learning a few basic skills can help you feel more confident on the court.

Serving

A serve starts every rally. For an overhand serve, stand in a comfortable position and toss the ball slightly in front of your hitting shoulder. Hit the ball with a firm, open hand.

Focus on getting the ball over the net and inside the court before adding more power. Practice serving toward a target to improve your control.

Passing

Passing helps your team control the ball and prepare for the next touch. Bend your knees and move toward the ball. Join your hands to make a flat surface with your forearms.

Aim your forearms toward your target and avoid swinging your arms too much. Practice with a partner who gently tosses the ball to you.

Teamwork

Communication is an important part of volleyball. Call “mine” early when you plan to play the ball. This helps your teammates know who is taking it.

Encourage your teammates and stay positive after mistakes. Talk about who will cover each area of the court and get ready for the next point.
